In Wichita, Kansas, analysts warn the ethanol surge raises corn prices and reshapes cattle feeding profits. Randy Black of Cattle-Fox says demand for corn will climb with new ethanol plants, creating a higher pricing plateau and possible long term shifts for cattle feeders.
Finney County Senior Center and Western Kansas Low Vision Clinic and Foundation offer a free low vision support group series with a session titled Living with Vision Loss: Hoping for Coping from 3 to 4 p.m. December 14 at 907 N. 10th St. in Finney County. The 10th meeting is part of a nationwide MD Support program aiding macular degeneration patients through information and coping strategies.
Environmental groups plan a Saturday rally on the Statehouse steps to urge Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to suspend permits for three new Sunflower Electric coal plants near Holcomb. Activists from students to mothers press for moratorium while Sebelius weighs energy growth and conservation. Nicole Corcoran says the governor is considering all options as the state balances development and environment.
Hamilton County Sheriff Mike Keating unveiled a memorial for Govan Mills and Ray Kumpf, the two officers killed in the line of duty. Mills died after being shot during a 1927 Syracuse investigation and Kumpf, then undersheriff, was killed in 1939 during a Holly robbery. A stone marker now lists their names and dates near the sheriff's office flagpole.
Gov Kathleen Sebelius declared a disaster emergency covering 27 counties as a winter storm brought freezing rain sleet and snow. State Emergency Operations Center activated to coordinate resources and speed power restoration for counties responding to the storm.
