Kansas mental hospitals strained by budget cuts amid rising demand
State lawmakers heard that funding cuts and a budget crisis have forced Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services to halt voluntary admissions at state hospitals. Over capacity stretched three facilities for a year, with Larned State Hospital overrun 302 days. Waiting lists grew as courts mandated treatment, while staff shortages and delayed funding left centers like Johnson County Mental Health Center with 32 vacancies and thousands of patients. Medicaid and private insurance help, but about half of seekers lack coverage, shifting costs to hospitals.
