City and County sue FEMA over revised flood plain maps
Finney County and Garden City, joined by three property owners, file in Wichita federal court to halt the September effect of updated flood plain maps. They seek a preliminary injunction and a restart of the flood insurance study to include two drainage ditches that would add over 1,800 county properties to the flood plain. The suit argues for constitutional and National Flood Insurance Act rights and follows FEMA’s denial to postpone the maps’ effective date.

Finney County Manages Meth Lab Cleanups After KDHE Cut
Finney County Sheriff Kevin Bascue says although KDHE ended its clandestine meth lab cleanup program last month, local authorities can handle remaining sites with existing resources. Lab finds in the county dropped from 11 between 2004 and 2005 to two in 2008, yet meth distribution remains a concern. Federal help may be needed for lab cleanup, which remains costly.
