Patricia Madison, a longtime Habitat for Humanity homeowner in Kansas City, fights eviction from the only home she and her three children know. She helped build it with Habitat's program requiring sweat equity. She cites loose shingles, chipped paint, and a gravel lawn as evidence of poor craftsmanship. Habitat, which offers zero interest mortgages and requires 300 to 500 hours of work, has built over 100,000 homes since 1976 in 80 countries.
