Werholtz warns cuts may force shorter sentences in Kansas
Kansas corrections chief Roger Werholtz told the House Appropriations Committee that further budget cuts could compromise prison safety, reduce crime victim services, curb supervision of parolees, and shutter a 554 bed Winfield minimum security prison. He noted already 40 prison jobs are left open and warned worsening conditions could push toward shorter sentences and parole terms. The hearing opened summer and fall sessions as lawmakers seek budget savings and potential school and social service cuts.
