In western Kansas about two dozen rare black-footed ferrets released last December show survival and reproduction. Volunteers counted at least four reproductions, with conservationists optimistic that 3 to 5 ferrets survived. A wild-born Kansas litter may mark the first such brood in over 50 years. Federal aims include 10 self sustaining populations nationwide by 2010 and 1 500 breeding adults.
