Finney County schools plan Monday return after disaster declaration

Finney County has declared a disaster and O'Connor says students will return Monday. Holcomb schools were closed Tuesday but are back in session. Damage is concentrated in the southern portion of the building with power out there and a damaged technology room. Temporary walls and dehumidification are in use while parts and equipment are replaced. Lunch and gym areas will be affected for weeks to months. Community support and contractor efforts are noted as the district adapts. Rain and storms recently added moisture with forecasts for cooler weekend temperatures and possible thunderstorms.

Loophole snares former illegal residents in Social Security case

The Social Security Protection Act of 2004 bars illegal residents and families from claiming benefits unless they gain legal status and work authorization. Spokesman Mark Lassiter notes credits may be posted if earnings are proven to be theirs. In 2004 SSA could not credit $66 billion due to 9 million mismatched W-2s, and 2005 saw 138,000 employer letters and 8.6 million employee notices for mismatches. A Liberal attorney says Avila’s defense centers on lack of criminal intent, while federal prosecutors say cases reflect individual actions, not an enforcement trend.
