His unit, totaling mainly southwest Kansans, has spent 120 days performing area security around Camp Scania, targeting anti-Iraqi forces, aiding the Iraqi army, and improving civilian life through water projects and school talks. He notes better communication with families via an Internet cafe and phone bank, contrasts with U.S. media images, and says his soldiers strive to understand local conditions while planning to return and resume teaching and coaching careers at Sublette High School.
