A three foot rattlesnake sparked alarm in Gillespie Place when found in the EarthBrookover residence backyard. A cat was reportedly teasing the snake as neighbor Leonard Smith described initial misidentification as a bull snake. Detective Richard Rohleder and Leonard Smith hunted the area with a pitchfork and shotgun but could not locate the reptile.
The Agriculture Department announced that Bluejacket wheat, a hard winter variety grown in Kansas and Missouri, will face a 20 cent per bushel discount in 1956 price support rates. Twenty three other varieties were also tagged for discounts to discourage inferior milling or baking qualities, with the discount applying to Bluejacket grown in Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming.
At Manston England a U S Air Force airman killed three and wounded six at a South England fighter base. He seized a car with a rifle and a pistol and fled to a beach resort before being trapped by police. He was wounded in the gun battle and died, with officials offering conflicting accounts of the cause. The gunman was identified as Airman 2C Napoleon Green, 21, of Chicago.
A three year old boy Ronnie Guthrie son of Mr and Mrs Ray Guthrie of 1214 Parkwood is recovering from encephalitis after initially suffering tonsillitis and a sudden high fever. He was rushed to St Catherine hospital where doctors diagnosed encephalitis and he has shown steady improvement since Monday with a possible home return by week end.
A car hit a bridge abutment on U S Highway 54 a half mile west of Fowler, killing two children and injuring their parents. The accident occurred yesterday and authorities investigated the crash at the scene. Further details on the victims and crash cause were not immediately available.
Gov. Fred Hall faces challenge from two Civil Service Board members Harald P. Trusler and James D. Gilmore who demand a fair hearing. They accuse Hall of political partisanship and seek to confront witnesses under oath, requesting Hall be sworn as well. Hall was unavailable for comment while in Colorado.

Mrs. Loren Gunkel is to appear next Tuesday. The case ties to a 22 year old Satanta resident who identified tavern sellers connected to a 17 year old fight in a tavern. Ellis was stabbed. Ross is accused of the stabbing.

India's Foreign Ministry says Ambassador G L Mehta's color incident at a Houston restaurant is closed after a State Department apology. Mehta and an Indian companion were moved to a private dining room after a supervisor suspected they were Negroes. US apology and government regret followed as Mehta traveled to Mexico City.

Finney county joins Kansas Livestock Association in a fund raising cattle drive for the Cowboy Capital at Dodge City this Friday. More than 1,000 head expected to be sold, with cattle to be delivered by Thursday evening to Garden City Sale Co and trucked over Friday. Earl Brookover chairs the Finney committee with John Colling and Oscar Norby. The drive aims to benefit the museum and Boys' Ranch and attract livestock men statewide.
