Faith in God Over Doctors Influences End of Life Views

A 1000 adult survey in Archives of Surgery shows 51 percent believe divine intervention could save a dying family member even if doctors deem treatment futile. About 75 percent support patients’ right to demand such treatment, with doctors noting the need to handle families awaiting a miracle and still present medical evidence. The study, led by Dr Lenworth Jacobs, notes trauma cases push institutions to balance faith with realistic prognoses, as hospitals employ social workers, counselors and chaplains in end of life care.

Nebraska expands safe haven to teens up to age nineteen

Nebraska's new safe haven law allows abandoning minors at hospitals with no questions asked, extending protection beyond babies to anyone under 19. The measure, effective July 18, broadens the option for distressed parents while not shielding criminal abuse cases.

Court upholds Ohio law banning funeral pickets

A federal appeals court in Cincinnati upheld an Ohio law banning pickets and protest within 300 feet of funerals or burials. The 6th Circuit affirmed a 300 foot buffer around cemeteries, funeral homes, or places of worship from one hour before to one hour after services, in a case brought by the Westboro Baptist Church. The ruling follows earlier decisions and contrasts with a district ruling that extended buffers along procession routes. The church remains appealing.
