Great Southwest child education conference at GCCC

The Kids of the Great Southwest conference runs 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 5 at Garden City Community College Academic Building for early childhood educators and parents. Cotton gin to be completed in October southwest Kansas

Construction of the first cotton gin in southwest Kansas, a $3.5 million Northwest Cotton Growers Cooperative Gin project on a 46 acre site near Moscow, is expected to finish around October 1. The venture requires about 30,000 acres of stripped cotton for first year viability amid drought and rising plantings since 2000.

Embattled Piper school chief quits

Piper USD superintendent Michael Rooney has resigned amid a plagiarism controversy. The Piper school board accepted his resignation as part of a settlement, with Rooney on paid leave until June 30 when his contract ends. Rooney had spurred the scandal after depositions showed he suggested changing failing grades for 25 students.

Tumbleweed Festival lights up Garden City stage this weekend

The 11th annual Tumbleweed Festival runs 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Lee Richardson Zoo greens. Three stages host local and international music plus a children's program with Mr. Bones returning and a giant sand castle new this year. Admission ranges from $1 to $6 with early button sales at local shops and banks.

Local police unveil LOCATOR missing child system

Garden City Police Department introduced LOCATOR, a Lost Child Alert Technology Resource, to speed missing children recovery. The Dell computer, HP printer, scanner, and 100 plus poster templates were donated by NCMEC with Congress funding, enabling faster, clearer posters and wider agency access nationwide.

Tobacco ban to cover Kansas prisons starts March first

Kansas moves to a tobacco free prison system with March first as contraband for inmates visitors and staff. The policy extends to all department property and may trigger disciplinary action or trafficking charges for possession or sale. Smoking cessation classes will be offered to inmates and staff.

Demonstrators plan counter rally near Capitol

State troopers will seal off streets and add security outside the Kansas State Capitol for a Saturday White Unity Rally by a neo Nazi group with Kansas ties. Civil rights groups plan counter demonstrations nearby as the Kansas Highway Patrol sets up metal detectors and weapon searches if needed.
