Kansas Supreme Court to hear coal plant permit case
The Kansas Supreme Court will hear Aug. 31 oral arguments in Topeka over the 2010 permit for Sunflower Electric and Tri-State to build an 895 megawatt coal plant near Holcomb in southwest Kansas. Environmental groups Sierra Club and Earthjustice contend the permit violated environmental protections, while Sunflower says the permit is sound. A federal judge delayed the project in January pending an environmental impact study.

Democrats criticize the plan as benefiting wealthy business owners ahead of the November election. Brownback says he chose a narrow slice within the tax cuts to maximize economic activity, noting most residents work for small employers. He had other options but prioritized growth via small business incentives.
