Minority business group files complaint in Wichita area
A coalition of more than 50 minority owned firms led by United Builders and Contractors Inc asks the White House to withhold federal funds from Wichita, Sedgwick County, and the Wichita School District until they increase minority contracting. They cite under 500 thousand dollars in minority contracts from nearly 800 million spent last year and accuse local governments of restricting African American business participation on federally assisted projects. Local officials express surprise and say policies exist to improve opportunities, while talks with the group remain unproductive.
