Holcomb approves 5 million budget with levy cut
Holcomb City Council approved a nearly 5 million dollar budget for 2015 with a 1.5 mill reduction in the levy. The owner of a 100000 dollar home would pay 556.23 in city property taxes next year, 16.08 less than this year. Water and sewer reserves allowed debt service reductions and postponed some purchases. The city projects about 518817 in property taxes for next year, compared with 503110 in 2014.

Drug testing for Kansas foster parents debated after heat death
Experts say drug testing is costly, often inaccurate, and not a reliable screening tool for foster-parent eligibility. Kansas imposes no mandatory tests, relying on suspicions, monitoring, and licensing rules to protect foster children. Authorities linked the July incident to marijuana use by the foster parent, who faces murder charges as investigations continue.

Brownback must return donation in campaign transfer
The Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission confirmed a violation by Gov. Sam Brownback for accepting a transfer from Campbell's campaign funds. Brownback would receive $2,000 from Campbell for Congress on June 26 and the same amount from Campbell personally, which is prohibited as transfers between campaigns for local, state or federal office. The governor's campaign plans to return the funds within 30 days, with Brownback spokesman John Milburn stating the money will be returned. Campbell has served in Congress since 2005 but is not seeking re election.
