Kansas oil boom boosts some residents and towns
In southern Kansas the oil boom since 2010 has poured lease payments into local governments and spurred hotel growth like the Cobblestone in Harper County, while fueling soaring housing costs and rents that squeeze renters and landowners without oil stakes. Land values rose 27 to 34 percent in Harper Barber and Comanche counties while residents cope with price spikes and displacement concerns. Local hotelier Eric Smith expands with a 45 room motel as others profit from the boom, yet skepticism remains among traditional oil firms about horizontal drilling.
