Brownback cautions on outdoor fires amid drought
Gov. Sam Brownback urged Kansas residents not to light outdoor fires as drought grips the state. He stopped short of a statewide burn ban, favoring local decisions while a disaster-declared state covers all 105 counties and 67 bans are in place. The drought relief program for farmers drew nine times the funds needed, with 1,800 requests totaling about 4.5 million dollars. Officials warned of scarce forage and rising costs, and Brownback will study prairie grass harvesting on highways and Cedar Crest grounds.
