Kansas officials urge easing public school proficiency standards
Senate Vice President John Vratil and Attorney General Phill Kline told the State Board of Education that the 2014 100 percent proficiency goal in math and reading is unrealistic and costly. They warned courts could force more funding while noting federal sanctions remain. They urged setting realistic goals and emphasized avoiding a repeat of the No Child Left Behind pressures. Seven districts and 15 schools failed annual math and reading targets, triggering possible transfers and sanctions.

Unemployed Kansans face work registration gaps
Nearly 30 percent of Kansas unemployment benefits paid in 2004 went to workers not properly registered for work. State officials attribute much of the issue to an aging computer system, not widespread noncompliance. Total benefits reached $289.5 million with about $95 million deemed nonfraudulent overpayments, and Kansas posted the nation's highest overpayment rate at 32.8 percent.
