Kansas to revisit science standards amid board shift
In December a 24 member committee will present the first draft of proposed changes to Kansas science standards with final approval expected by summer 2005. Conservative gains in the State Board of Education after Kathy Martin’s victory give a 6-4 majority likely to favor including creationism alongside evolution. The debate traces to 1999, with ongoing tensions over how to teach origins, while the committee aims to balance evidence with separation of church and state and prepare students for revised annual testing.
