A teen decoy named Chavez failed a store check when a clerk misread an ID, prompting a statewide Remind and Reward effort funded by alcohol and tobacco taxes. Officials warn that fines remain, with clerks facing at least $200 and shops up to $1,000 penalties. Local results show 81 percent regional compliance, below the 90 percent goal, risking a $5 million annual penalty if not improved. Chavez says the program raises awareness about smoking harms and hopes more adults join efforts.
Emilio Cruz-Zurita, 55, of 1411 St John St, was arrested July 20 in southwest Garden City on 21 counts including five counts of rape, five counts of aggravated criminal sodomy and five counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child. A 14-year-old girl and a 17-year-old girl are named as victims. He faces 11 counts of rape by force or fear, five counts of rape involving a child, one count attempted rape, one count aggravated criminal sodomy, two counts aggravated sodomy by force, and one count aggravated indecent liberties with a child. Next court appearance is Aug 14 at 2 p.m.. bond set at $900,000. He is jailed in Finney County.
