Gov Brownback names three judicial appointees in Kansas
Gov. Sam Brownback announced Wichita attorney Jeff Dewey as 18th District Judge Blake Bittel of Hays as 2nd District Judge and Steen Santala of Salina as 26th District Magistrate Judge. All won party primaries and face unopposed November ballots. Santala is a former FBI agent and KU Northern graduate and fills the vacancy created by Tommy Webb’s resignation. The 26th District includes Grant Haskell Morton Seward Stanton and Stevens counties. Brownback previously left the vacancy to voters after 90 days, prompting legal challenges from three Southwest judges. The Kansas Supreme Court later ruled the governor need not fill the seat within 90 days.
