Garden City approves Meadowlark Dairy plant deal
Garden City commissioners approved a development agreement and a lease with option to purchase with Meadowlark Dairy Nutrition LLC a Dairy Farmers of America subsidiary. The plan calls for a 321000 square foot USDA dairy dryer milk processing plant on the east side of US 83 near the Arkansas River with 55 jobs and an average salary of 61000. The city will invest in highway intersection improvements and provide reduced utility rates for 10 years while Meadowlark pays for its own water and electric use. Net city gains from electric and water fees are projected at about 3.5 million over a decade.

Audit urges savings in district nurse staffing decision
A legislative audit shows Au burn-Washburn USD 487 could save about 68 thousand dollars annually by replacing four of its ten nurses with health aides. The move would also trim state pension costs by nine thousand dollars, though former superintendent Brenda Dietrich notes parents prefer nurses. USD 487 might hire a certified nurse assistant at Tallgrass Learning Center in future openings while keeping licensed nurses for complex care.
