Two wheat champions were named at the district 4-H wheat show this morning. Tom Berscheidt of Larned won the milling and baking honor on a Commanche wheat sample yielding 18 bushels per acre with 64 pound weight and 13.85 percent protein. Gary Cumings of Ford earned the wheat championship with a Ponca variety sample averaging 30 bushels per acre. the test showed 64 pounds and 11.2 percent moisture. About 75 entries competed, with judges Frank Bieberly and C W Pence officiating. The event, third of its kind in the state this year, drew nearly 100 attendees and featured speakers Kathleen Knipe, Norman Whitehair, and Lester Fisher.

Two-Vehicle Crash on US 50 Near Lakin Injures No One
A pickup truck driven by Edward DeKeyser and a Cadillac driven by Charles Springer collided on US 50 five miles east of Lakin at 10 p.m. Five passengers escaped unhurt. DeKeyser, 41, of Deerfield and Springer, 61, of Garden City were eastbound. Springer attempted to pass as DeKeyser signaled a left turn. The impact left each vehicle on its wheels. the truck skidded 227 feet, the car 400 feet. Springer’s car veered into a ditch and stopped on the shoulder. the head injury obstructed the driver's view. Passengers included Mrs. DeKeyser and their children, Ed and Bonnie. Vehicles heavily damaged.

City Gas Well Costs Revealed for Garden City No 1
Drilling and equipment for Garden City No 1 gas well totaled 27 621 49 dollars with the city learning the figure this week. The well has produced since January 17 and the city will repay the cost plus interest from seven eighths of production. City Manager Deane Wiley noted about 3 200 dollars of the cost has been paid in five percent months on line while the city’s one eighth share brought just over 400 dollars. The city paid half of the 1 866 dollars needed to run a gathering line from the well to city limits. Drilling occurred in October and November.
