Freshman group proposes budget balance with tax hikes
A bipartisan team of House freshmen proposed balancing the budget and boosting schools and social services with tax increases. The plan, backed by 16 Republicans and Democrats, includes a half cent sales tax hike, a 3.5 percent individual income tax surcharge, and delayed school aid payments, aiming to close a $254 million deficit in the 10 billion fiscal year. The measure awaits debate after the House Appropriations Committee endorsed a related clean-up bill.
