Plants to close for nationwide immigration protests

Tyson, other plants to close for rally. Cargill Meat Solutions will halt operations at its Dodge City plant and seven of its largest plants will run on a Tue–Sat schedule next week while plants in Iowa Illinois Texas Nebraska and Colorado close. House defeats bid to repeal in state tuition for illegals

In Topeka, the House blocked Rep. Becky Hutchins’s sixth repeal attempt of a law allowing illegal immigrant students to pay in state tuition at public colleges. An amendment by Rep. Nile Dillmore passed, shifting focus to a budget measure cracking down on employers who hire illegal immigrants. Some conservative Republicans warned the penalty could affect universities and funding.

Kongkane Souphasavath, 41, pleaded no contest to second degree murder and attempted second degree murder in the December 2005 killing of Lucky Kingstone and shooting of Sisana Detvongsa. Plea deal reduced charges from first degree murder and attempted first degree murder. burglary theft and criminal damage were dismissed.
