Venna E. Holmes 88 dies April 24 2003 at her Garden City home. Graveside service 2 p.m. Saturday at Valley View Cemetery Garden City officiated by Dr. Richard P. Frederick. Survived by three sons two daughters and numerous grandchildren great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Memorials to American Diabetes Association or Gideons International care of Garland Funeral Home.

Governor Kathleen Sebelius proposed more than 30 amendments to the $10 billion state budget to fund expanded medical care for the needy, keep prison visitor centers open, and renovate Hashinger Hall at KU. The plan adds $28.5 million for unanticipated medical costs, with $21 million federal funds, and would close some centers unless funded. It also shifts cash reserves for community corrections to develop drug treatment programs as lawmakers return from recess.
U S District Judge Julie Robinson kept the seven charges against former Westar Energy chief David Wittig and ex Capital City Bank president Weidner on track and scheduled another pretrial hearing. Wittig seeks a change of venue citing pretrial publicity while Weidner favors a Topeka venue. Robinson said ruling on dismissals was premature.
