Immigrant Rallies Draw Massive National Turnout

Hundreds of thousands joined protests across the United States urging an immigration overhaul. Florentino Cruz, an undocumented Mexican worker, carried a sign stating the U S A is made of immigrants like me. Gov Bill Richardson called rallies bigger than the civil rights movement as demonstrations spread from Atlanta to Garden City Kansas.

Immigrant rally in Stevens Park draws large crowd

Organizers call Monday’s Stevens Park rally a success with an estimated turnout between 1,500 and 3,000 people. The event supported comprehensive immigration reform and opposed HR 4437, amid rallies in several Kansas cities. Local activist Silvia Lira of St. Mary Catholic Church praised the turnout.

Odor-Reduction Study Aims at Western Kansas Feedlots

Researchers at Fort Hays State University and Kansas State University are examining key compounds in cattle manure odor to reduce the strong smell from western Kansas feedlots. Beef cattle scientist John Jaeger notes potential statewide and national benefits, while Fort Hays chemist Ed Olmstead and students Katie Carnes and Heber Chacon Madrid assist.

Finney County oil and gas project nears completion

Finney County finishes an oil and gas assessment begun in April 2004 by Visual Lease Services. The project identified pipelines and equipment not taxed and 136 miles of pipelines were found. Appraiser Roop said market values will determine tax amounts and potential protests may follow.

Former Garden City teacher enters not guilty plea

Former Garden City High School teacher Na dine Nunnelee, 40, pleaded not guilty to charges of sexual relations with a 16-year-old student. District Judge Thomas Richardson scheduled a trial for 9 a.m. August 16 through 18. Nunnelee was arrested January 4 and faces alleged conduct between December 18 and 25, 2005. The USD 457 Board of Education accepted her resignation April 3.
