County fights prairie chicken listing move in state plan
County commissioners urged the Bureau of Land Management to grant coordinating status during the revised resource management plan and environmental impact statement process for the lesser prairie chicken. KNRC officials say local input will be heard as Texas Oklahoma and Kansas consolidate habitat considerations. The listing as a threatened species was proposed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on March 27 due to habitat loss, with the May 1 effect anticipated. Carlson notes coordination ensures county land use priorities shape federal action.
