Tax hike talks stall over funding needs in Kansas
In Topeka the Assessment and Taxation Committee failed to settle how much revenue to raise as part of a budget fix. The Ways and Means panel backed two bills and, with Thursday work, aimed to reconcile numbers. The growing gap between spending needs and revenues tops $700 million for the next 15 months, with proposals eyeing sales, tobacco and estate taxes and potential use of rainy day funds. Governor Graves opposes tapping reserves, while Democrats push to avoid debt by raising taxes.
