A federal judge in Kansas ruled that the EPA must enforce stricter water quality standards, requiring redesignation of over 900 streams and lakes as suitable for fishing and swimming or justified changes, impacting KDHE assessments and potential removals from EPA's regulated list. Svaty among three dissenters on Kansas power bill
Freshman Kansas lawmaker Josh Svaty of Ellsworth dissented as the House backed a bill by 121 to 3, enabling regulators to decide electric rates before building new coal plants. Sunflower Electric Power Corp. supports the measure to attract investors for an $800 million coal plant near Garden City, while critics urge stronger emphasis on conservation. The bill also allows pre-approval of rating principles for power purchases and certain transmission lines.
