Holcomb candidates discuss fire services and city budgeting
Holcomb council hears from Garden City manager on manning the fire station during Sunflower Electric’s second coal plant build. The budget includes a volunteer force with 72 400 dollars, 5 200 paid to Garden City for admin services, and calls for maintaining property taxes amid a limited sales tax base. Concordant leaders emphasize frugal spending, upcoming highway work, and staff changes as they seek stable city operations and future paving with grants.

Pope John Paul II’s Condition Worsens Amid Vatican Cautions
Vatican reports the pope’s condition deteriorated with earlier denial of a coma claim. Television footage showed the Bronze Door near St. Peter’s Square closing as about 30 police stood nearby. Earlier statements described massive heart problems, yet he remained lucid, celebrated Mass, and asked aides to read Christ’s Crucifixion. Despite critical illness, he chose to stay in his apartment and continued engaging with bishops and officials as the Holy See released an afternoon update.
