55th annual Chicago Park flower show opens at Garfield Park

The 55th spring and Easter flower show at Garfield Park conservatory begins Sunday and runs through April 9. About 2,000 lilies are on display with Easter lilies predominant. A Dutch cottage with thatched roof and a stork features bulbs from Holland, including tulips, hyacinths and narcissi. Other displays include cineramas, schizanthus, hydrangeas, astilbes, snapdragons, and stocks. A large eight by four foot Easter egg exhibit with a viewing window shows an incubator with chicks. School and civic group guides are available by telephoning Kedzie 3-1281.

County Sells Midwest Hotel To Land Trust for $151,000

The 13 story Midwest hotel at 6 N. Hamlin, built in the 1920s as a swank athletic club, has sold to a land trust led by David I. Spark and Charles M. Holleb for 151000. The buyers plan a licensed sheltered care center for elderly or needy residents, with remodel estimated at 450000 to 600000.

Cops Urge Citizens Aid In Austin Crime Fight

A racially mixed Austin audience heard police officials urge public help to curb violence, highlighting the Crime Stop program and introducing Sgt. Art Ferrando as community relations officer. Capt. Thanasouras said crime exists but warned against rumors, noting fewer crimes this period than last year and stressing youth issues involve all of society, including churches.

Work Started On Austin North Traffic Project

Work began this week on a 68273 improvement at the Austin North intersection. Francis S. Lorenz, director of the Illinois Department of Public Works and Buildings, announced Rock Road Construction Co. will complete the project in 50 days. The contract calls for reconstruction and channelization including medians traffic island repaving and modernization of signals.

Mayor Richard Daley will throw the switch to turn on the alley lights in Huron street between Lorel and Lockwood at 7 p.m. signaling the completion of the 37th ward alley lighting project.

Plant Rented For College Extension Center at Newark

The Illinois Teachers College South will establish an extension center in 47000 square feet on the Newark Electronics Corp building’s second floor at 500 N Pulaski. It will house upper level and graduate courses replacing the Crane branch. Leases from July 1 at 1104500 annually were approved by the Board of Governors meeting in Macomb and Gov Otts Kerner signed.

Easter egg hunts and party events mark West Northwest Side park programs from Kelvyn and Kosciuszko Parks to Austin Town Hall.
