A Galena real estate man said he could rent twenty five new modern houses within days if they could be found in the city. He noted scarcity of desirable homes, with several families planning to move this fall, estimating about 200 extra residents if suitable dwellings were available. He argued investment in new homes could recapture money leaving for western farms.
Local Rebekahs marked the fifty fifth anniversary of their lodge at Wildey Hall with a full program and services. Attendees included many visiting Rebekahs from out of town as they heard addresses, solos, recitations, roll calls, and blessings amid applause.
A carload of dynamite exploded in Jellico Tennessee this morning, killing fifteen people and injuring more than thirty others. The blast wrecked the village’s business section and the cause was not learned. The event occurred in the heart of Jellico, Knoxville reporters noted.
Benton man Harold P. Flick and Darlington woman Clara Colebeck were married yesterday at noon in this city with Rev. J. A. Matlack officiating. There were no attendants.
Chas Longett of Savanna dies after a short illness this forenoon. He was about 65, survived by his wife and three children Helen John and Charles. He was an uncle of J. C. and Ralph Calderwood of this city. Funeral details are not yet learned. Wanted A good teamster at Galva Iron Works.
Bond Bros of this city won the bid to paint the county court house exterior and roof including wood trim while brick walls stay unpainted. The project should finish by late October and groundwork for grounds grading is expected to start next year after substantial filling and other improvements.
Col Frank O Lowden, a leading congress candidate, visited Warren by error while en route to Galena. He and James R Cowley misread schedules, learning the Lead Mine city fair was next week, so they returned to Freeport after a brief stop.
J A Stranske of Savanna purchased the Bench Bros and Company wagon shop tools in Galena. He plans to move the machinery to Savanna and set up a wagon shop there. The Bench shop’s closing ends a long flame of Galena’s wagon industry as machinery replaced hand work.
T Lindenberger of the Lessauer Diamond house in New York toured Kraehmer's jewelry store today. He claimed diamonds continually rise in price, up about 175 percent over ten years, with mining depths around 3500 feet and an approaching supply exhaustion. He carried a parcel worth $50,000 containing stones valued up to $2,000 each.
U S Navy sailors aboard the Marietta were fired upon by insurgents while guarding the Soledad plantation near Havana. The attackers fled after the return fire as battleships Louisiana Virginia and cruisers Cleveland Omaha arrived in port this morning. Folding go carts sold at Contaworths from 1.49 to 5.95.
Edw Lacy the operator discovered a broken gas pipe at the Illinois Central passenger depot allowing fumes to escape into a room. He opened a door to vent the gas but warned that using a light could have caused a terrible explosion. The pipe was plugged with no serious damage.
The Evangelistic association executive committee met at the YMCA to set dates for three weeks of union meetings starting October 21. A large attendance is expected with several speakers lined up and multiple stirring sermons planned. Committees were appointed on finance preliminaries press and advertising ushers and music to organize final arrangements and a chorus of 100 led by P. P. Bilhorn under R. M. Crissman.
The east side reports multiple dogs dying after exposure to poison thrown on streets at night. No clues point to the culprit, and owners vow vengeance as dogs are found dead before morning.

Mr Strausser, Scrabble Creek mine superintendent, and another miner descended an idle Hazel Green shaft Thursday morning. They were overcome by damp foul air, saved by colleagues, revived by a doctor, and returned to health.
Railroad men predict the worst car famine in years with the Illinois Central owning about 67 000 freight cars and over 21 000 out of service. With rivals hogging cars for a dollar a day each, the Central loses use of nearly a third of its fleet leaving it with only 800 cars on its lines according to the latest report.
Dubuque resident Joseph Kriebs aged 58 died at Finley hospital following several weeks of illness. Born in Potosi Wisconsin he lived in Dubuque fifteen years after residing in Galena. Survived by his father two brothers and four sisters he will be buried in Dubuque after the 9am Saturday funeral at St Marys Church. Coatsworths dry goods offers a free Rub-dry wash cloth to customers spending 25 cents or more Saturday night with music provided.
A cyclone swept through Springfield Minnesota on Sept 21 destroying eleven structures and causing about 100000 dollars in damage this morning.
