In Havana and Isle of Pines tensions rise as one third of the island’s residents, U.S. citizens, challenge Cuban sovereignty. A U.S. delegate to Congress is proposed to press for annexation, citing the Paris treaty language and a provisional local government led by I B Anderson secretary and Ed C Ryan as delegate. The Cuban government protests and awaits Senate action on a Platt amendment treaty.
Pearcy at the request of squiers the United States minister refuted the circumstances leading to the movement and asserted there was no intention on the part of those elected to assume their offices unless they had the backing of the United States government. Then later he declared that the Americans on the Island would resist being governed by Cuba and that their own officials would discharge their functions for the Americans concerned without reference to Cuban residents. Americans would continue paying customs duties under protest but would pay internal taxes only to American collectors and would resist any Cuban attempt to prevent American officials from meeting the entire American population. In Springfield Alabama a violent clash between black pupils of Palmer School and white pupils of St Mary’s parochial school ended with Clarence Cousins arrested and others with revolvers and rifles. Police warned more arrests will follow after the in front of the Palmer school incident.
New York November 16 Harriman B H W Harri man chairman of Union Pacific board and former Equitable director testified before the Armstrong committee on Insurance Investigation denying Hyde's charges of unfriendly acts. He said Hyde sought his influence for a France ambassador post and defended Hyde amid Equitable troubles while admitting uncertainty on some details about the 50 million Union Practice pool and Odell settlement.
Hyde, recalled after Harriman testified, reaffirmed his prior statements and clarified questions Harriman wavered on. He detailed four offers for his stock besides Ryan’s, led by Young at 7 million dollars. all declined as not in the society’s best interests. The session closed with Odell slated to be examined next.
A striking bronze cartouch and chipeaux intended for Senator William A. Clark’s New York residence will be exhibited at the World’s Fair. Special to Tribune New York Nov 16 A terrible tenement fire this morning killed five people of Italian origin and injured several others. Victims include Antonia Lorca 24 and Joseph Laudante 33 with three unidentified victims. The blaze started in a hallway and is thought incendiary. Officers rescued about fifty foreigners after firefighters and police climbed fire escapes. Fire Chief Doane was seriously injured.
At the American Federation of Labor session in Pittsburg delegates were invited to meet in Denver next year. President Gompera urged rejecting gifts to the entertainment committee. A blaze appeared in flag decorations during William Moses of England’s remarks, causing a brief ten minute panic and interruption.
