Edward Huebner a Dubuque carpenter attempted suicide by drinking carbolic acid on Wednesday. Friends stopped him first, later found near the Wales Hotel and taken to Mercy Hospital for antidotes.
Mrs. Joseph Richardson died suddenly at her Milbrig home Wednesday evening at seven o'clock. A longtime Milbrig resident she is survived by four daughters. Funeral services are set for Friday afternoon at two o'clock with interment in Grant Hill cemetery.
Local notes report bargain pitches at the Bee Hive and numerous visits by residents like Miss Hazel Groves and Mrs. Thomas Trevarthen. A slate roof project for the high school progresses with a carload arriving, and a $5,000 machinery purchase for Babel lead mine near Warren. Birthday, marriage, and funeral notices appear along with upcoming meetings of Spring Street Hose Co. No. 6 and the Daughters of Rebecca. An engine sale and a squirrel dinner at Holly House are noted, plus an excursion train from Seneca to Elizabeth themed around mine visitors.
Members rehearse for the five act military drama Edwards The Spy to be staged next Thursday at Turver Hall. Galena's youth perform with several company M members in the cast, closing with a grand illuminated tableau. Tickets will be on sale soon. the cast includes Julius Melies Oscar Burfield Merton Webel Joseph Meni Lip Taylor Ray Suffer William Meller and others from Galena.
The Galena Concert and Dance Orchestra, newly organized under Frank Willy, brings local musicians to dances. Members include Ernest Lind, Roscoe Bogart, Bertha Grimm, Leo Molito, Joseph Molitor, Ernest Sehnmacher, and others. Willy previously directed the Juvenile Brownie Band.
H B Erb learns he is heir to a fortune possibly worth 250 million dollars. The claim traces to John Casper Erb, a Philadelphia settler, who married Theibald Metzgar’s daughter. Metzgar allegedly loaned 29 million to Holland’s king in 1691, accruing large interest. Eastern lawyers search for papers. Mrs John Casper Erb aids in recovering the remainder.
A Stockton Ladies circle of the G A R held a benefit supper to raise funds for a monument in the Ladies Union cemetery honoring soldiers buried in unknown graves during the War of the Rebellion. The event stirred strong patriotism and public spirit, clearing over fifty dollars.
Reverend J H Bagwill, recently serving the Baptist church in Warren, has been appointed supervisor of the southern Illinois penitentiary at Chester by Governor Deneen. He departed Warren this week to assume duties, after a personal acquaintance with the governor. Bagwill’s former Jackson County home and early life are noted, and locals express regret at his departure while offering congratulations on the gubernatorial appointment. The Hanover Journal reports marriage licenses issued today to Earl Mastings of Elyria Ohio and Nellie McCarthy of Galena, and to John Gregor and Minnie Burgdort, both of this city. It notes delayed freight traffic clogging Hanover side tracks and water supply issues at Elizabeth and Stockton causing further disruption.
The Times says strict Christian Science beliefs blamed for two diphtheria deaths in Dubuque as parents refused early physician care. Reginald Bishop of 21 Edith Street and Hanelda Meyer of 1652 Washington Street died within hours of medical neglect. An investigation by the city board of health is expected amid quarantine violations and calls to place offenders in the pest house.
Reorganization of the Freeport baseball association was effected Tuesday at meetings held in the afternoon and evening. Directors were elected reducing the board from nine to five: G. G. McCarty, Frank Lohr, Oscar Youngs, J. O. Keene and George Tinsley. Incumbent officers remain until March. President Louis Biersach, Vice President Charles B. Niemann, Secretary W. A. Stevens, Treasurer Louis Jungkunz. A city hall meeting noted previous director resignations and questioned legality of the last spring organization under state corporation laws.

Members of St. Joseph's Society held a progressive euchre party at their Franklin street hall on Wednesday evening. About twenty-two tables were played with prizes awarded to DP. A. Callahan for the gentlemen's head prize and Miss Adele Callahan for the ladies' head prize. Leo Bertch won the gents' lone hand prize, Katie Hubacher the Indies' lone hand prize. Light refreshments were served.
George Hughes, former Dubuque second baseman, signed with Peoria for next season on Tuesday. Charlie Buelow, Dubuque manager designate, secured the contract. Hughes, a top pitcher and versatile fielder, will likely star for Peoria. Dubuque will miss his strength as McFarland aims to replace him with a comparable second baseman.
Funeral services over the remains of Mrs James Roberts were held this afternoon at the family home on Bench Street with Rev J A Matlack officiating. Pallbearers included Judge William Rippin Judge J S Banine Annie W T Hadeon Gar ret Capt William Vincent and co Avery. Interment is at Greenwood.
