Rewey A Busy Camp New Drilling Outfits Being received

Rewey Wisconsin March 31 Rewey bids fair to become a great mining center with a dozen new drilling outfits unloaded recently and many mines concentrator mills and buildings nearing completion. The town sits on the ridge dividing Pecatonica and Platte rivers and grows as railway spurs are planned to support mining activity. Jeff W Rewey the town founder and former state legislator left a strong civic imprint as a robust Republican leader.

Historic Watch Presented to Capt Hathaway by Jo Daviess County

A silver London made Henry F James watch was given in 1855 by Jo Daviess County to Capt A Hathaway, veteran of the Black Hawk war, for his services. He later bequeathed it to his nephew A L Hathaway of Guilford township, who still keeps it as a rare keepsake.

Mrs. Gorge Berdell of Krede Nebraska asks her mother in law Mrs. Carroll in Dodge Street city for information on her husband who left home with a carload of sheep for Chicago several days ago and has not been heard from. His whereabouts remain a mystery and Chicago police may be asked to help.

The Galena Map company shipped a large batch of mining maps this morning. The maps are in demand across the mining district and valued by miners and investors for pinpointing exact mine locations. Hundreds already sent out with orders filling daily.

Child injured by wash wringer in Burlington

Margaret Burns, aged 2, daughter of M. J. Burns the Burlington agent, suffered a severe finger injury yesterday while playing near the family wash but the finger may be saved after a physician dressed the wound. The incident occurred as the child's finger was caught between the wringer cogs, tearing the nail and causing deep cuts.

Prominent Mason Hiram Gilmore Dies at 65

Hiram Gilmore died Saturday in Georgetown at age 65. His body was moved to be shipped to Farley for funeral services held Tuesday morning under Masonic auspices. He served as grand custodian of the Masonic lodge of Towa and was regarded as a leading Iowa Mason. He is survived by his wife.

Cuba City Fourth of July Plans Nearing Action

The talk of the town that Cuba City would celebrate the Fourth has crystallized into fact and we may expect a meeting to be called at an early date to arrange the preliminaries. Fox bounty story notes Henry Husky of Louisberg collected five dollars bounty and one mile for a Dunlieth township fox. Only three women carriers exist in the United States and Granite City Illinois features one who fought off highwaymen and delivered mail despite a late snowstorm.

Sailor John B. Fye Believed Dead After Long Voyage

A letter dated March 9 1906 from Preston England relays that John B Fye, once believed drowned after a ship disaster, has long sailed the seas from San Francisco to New South Wales Cape Horn to Hall England. The letter notes the rough life at sea and confirms the crew losses when the ship disappeared.

Foreign laborers hired for Great Western project near Stockton

A gang of fifty Austrians arrived at Gorena Junction to work on the Great Western construction between Gorena Junction and Stockton. Laborers earn 1.50 to 1.75 dollars daily, and contractors report American workers proving unreliable. Despite shortages, good American labor exists but is scarce, forcing continued use of foreign crews. Progress is steady with frost gone and graders active. rock work and steam shovels expected. Rumors say double tracking Stockton to Olewein Town may start, creating months of work for many locals.

Masons Hold Banquet At Miners Lodge No 273

Miners Lodge 273 A F and A M held a meeting last evening promoting two candidates in the master mason degree. Ten visiting masons from Hazel Green Cuba City and Benton attended and a banquet followed with speeches by prominent members. The lodge, among the oldest in the state, dates to an early era and has a large current membership. A youth playing near Northwestern yard cars narrowly escaped death when a switch engine almost struck him.

A new mining company forms in Menominee to drill on George Heitcamp land a forty acre tract believed to hold lead and jack ore. Past activity near John Kuhl land yielded ore and a 40 foot drill setback prompted a fresh bore as hopes rise for richer finds nearby.

Rich ore strike at Mann mine near city

Miners at the Mann mine near this city report heavy chunks of lead ore, with pieces up to 150 pounds found yesterday. The strike appears rich and the mine is owned by the Mann Mining Company of this city, machinery recently installed.

Library directors balk at high price for Carnegie site

The city library board met at the library this morning to discuss locating a Carnegie library site. No site was chosen, and officials doubt a selection will occur soon. They object to asking prices on Main street parcels and will continue investigating for a fair figure, noting some sellers may be holding out for more than value. They deem spending 18 000 to 20 000 for a few lots excessive for a building of this character.

Dog Poisoner Strikes Galena Hunting Dog

A valuable hunting dog belonging to John Meneguin was poisoned yesterday in Galena. Meneguin laments the loss and urges swift action. State law imposes a heavy penalty for poisoning animals and the culprit faces prosecution if caught.

Lead strike near Shuilsburg at Hinder tract mine

Struck Good Lead reports J. H. Robertson near Shuilsburg has hit a rich lead on the Hinder tract adjoining the B. C mine to the north. A heavy disseminated ore body and a sheet of high grade jack, 10 to 15 inches thick, were found. The Platteville Witness notes the mine sits in a promising area and should prove a winner.

Three More Tramps Hauled In Then Marched Out of Galena

Galena police raided hobos sleeping in empty Northwestern box cars at 1:30 a.m. Three men were detained overnight in crowded jail conditions and marched through the city toward the I C tracks. As officers moved them out, three new arrivals fled, joining a recent surge of hobos in town drawn by railroad work and tentative job offers.
