In Benton Wisconsin a heavy lead drill sank 40 feet on the Oliver farm in New Diggings township. Officials expect a 150 foot total depth as sinking continues in search of a potential large jack mine. Stockholders include Vail Otis Buehan Hillery Froggatt Teasdale Mrs Brown Win Skell.
An East Galewa social at Mr and Mrs Geo Hornbys home in Rice drew nearly thirty young attendees with12 oclock refreshments. Local chatter notes farmers welcoming a change after unseasonable weather. Several residents and visitors are named including Carrie Virtue Jennie Richards Arch Virtue and Dan McCann. News mentions a temperance lecture at Mount Pleasant and Farmland moves, while future wedding rumors circulate.
The Elgin Courier reports Miss Elsie M. Britton will marry Walter Forrester Thursday at 7 pm at her parents home, 860 North Crystal Street. A registered package addressed to Mrs Walter Forrester cannot be signed for until after the wedding. Forrester’s Minnesota parents and prior Elgin residence noted. Britton teaches at Crant school.
Mississippi Valley Development Co resumes oil prospects on Sand Prairie holdings north of Savanna. Robert Wrigley of Tola Kansas brings a Standard rig valued at $10,000 with 3,000 foot capability and a four man crew. He prepares to drill starting soon, with coal and steel casing staged in Hanover and hopes high for a local oil boom.
George Evans, an insane man, escaped from Green county poorhouse at Monroe. He was spotted north of Lena, harassing farmers. Sheriff McCool retrieved him and plans to return him to Monroe this evening.

Cleveland capitalists announce a merger of 541 miles of Wisconsin and Illinois electric lines with 20 million dollars in capitalization. The plan spans from Dubuque to Madison and aims toward St. Louis, with through service on major routes and sleeping cars possible within years. Key players include Mandelbaum syndicate, Aurora Elgin and Chicago officials, and Chicago inspection tours continue.

The Century zinc mine in Wisconsin sold Tuesday at Benton for 30,000 to Mineral Point Lead and Zinc Co. of Mineral Point. Owners cited heavy machinery needs and high water. buyers plan immediate upgrades to increase production and value. Russell Mining Co. incorporates in Illinois.

Mrs Elizabeth Spensley wife of Ralph Spensley of Dubuque died at her home Tuesday after an illness of several weeks. Born in New Diggings Wisconsin she moved to Dubuque with her husband in 1872. Survived by husband seven children her aged mother Elizabeth Fawcett of New Diggings six brothers and two sisters including James and George Fawcett New Diggings William Leadmine Ralph South Wayne Frank Gravity Thomas Elgin Neb Mrs John Eastwood Liberty Neb and Mrs John Calvert of this city.
Passengers on the Northwestern faced a rough delay when a flange failure caused a derailment about a quarter mile beyond Millbrig. Several flat cars carrying rock were also derailed, blocking traffic for a time. A box car was sent from the city to move passengers, and the cars were later re-railed with minor effort.
