Insane Carpenter Captured After Two Day Standoff Near Jubilee

William Riegert held Deputies Fash Peters and many farmers at bay for nearly two days in a Jubilee area house. Captured Saturday afternoon, he was moved to Watertown by Deputies Ford and Coukey. He offered little resistance and protested he did not want to go. His wife visited him in jail yesterday with no unusual developments.

Miss Myrtle Renwick Arrives to Assume County Superintendent Duties

Miss Myrtle Renwick of Warren, newly appointed county superintendent of schools, arrived in the city this morning and has assumed the office. At a prior board of supervisors meeting, the late J W Wilcox accounts and books were reviewed and found correct in all details. Renwick will spend several days each week at the local office.

Old English Clock Restored in Langworthy Home

A Dubuque exchange notes a wooden grandfather clock, dating to 1882, restored by a local jeweler. Once hauled from Chicago by ox teams, the eight foot case houses a forty six pipe organ and four figures. The Langworthy heirloom, now ready for placement, accompanies the Massys who leave for England on April 7.

Man With A History A Slave Brought Here By Kittoe

Moses Lester an elderly man of mixed Spanish and Indian heritage, born in the far south and once enslaved, died of pneumonia in Galena on Monday. He served in Sherman’s army hospital, came to Illinois with W K Kittoe, later worked as a sexton, and was known as a peculiar weather prophet with a long black mane. He left several children and had many friends in the city.
