The article argues mining should be treated as a business proposition run with merchantlike principles to build regional growth, suggesting the area could host some of the country’s largest mines.
The Dubuque and Dunleith Bridge company reports show river draw openings declined over three years. Draw opened 1903 eighty eight, 1904 one hundred, 1905 five hundred? The article notes a sharp drop in boat traffic and predicts a late ice break with river stage at eight feet and falling.
Dr M H Cleary and W B Hansing of this city were chosen as delegates to the M W A of Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois convention to be held at Freeport next Wednesday. The purpose is to fix the picnic date for 1907. Jo Daviess county will send about a hundred delegates, reflecting nearly a thousand Woodmen members in the county.
The comic opera The Corner Store presented Saturday evening by the Tuesday Evening club drew a large audience with nearly every seat filled. The production was lively and humorous from start to finish, earning enthusiastic applause and proving local talent capable and entertaining. Henry Miller plans to close his upper Main street saloon and sell the bar and fixtures. He will focus on his new business at Commerce and Hill, recently purchased from Brickler Bros, and is known for long service with Eulberg Brewing Co.
Michael Dempsey a 65 year old Galena resident dies after a year long illness of dropsy and heart trouble. A famed riverman and later a miner he lived with sister Ellen and cousin Edward Mahoney. He was unmarried and will have funeral at St Michael's on Wednesday at two after leaving his home for the church.
Early morning near this city a horse pulling an ice scraper plunged into thin ice on a pond. It rose with a near drowning, rescued by several men. The ice dealer Mr. Taylor had begun cutting for the summer supply, which remains short. If cold weather lasts, a few more tons may be cut this season.
Mrs. H. O. Cady spoke on life and work in China at the annual Thank Offering service of the Woman's Foreign Missionary society. Her West China field was highlighted from personal missionary experience. Dr. C. L. Hoffman and Mrs. Alice J. Hird joined the church, followed by Mrs. W. M. Smith who united last Sunday.
The Big Tom Syndicate unloaded its fourth drill and will operate at the Sherard farm two miles north of the city on recently worked property of Sherill and Cornielson. A fing showing of jack and drybone is noted on the premises. Mr and Mrs W T Hodson and daughter Effie visited Cedar Falls, Indiana, over the weekend. Mr Hodson returned to Galena today.
Rumor says John Ehrler who moved from Weston collapsed and died at his brother Michael Ehrler’s home in East Galena during the day. No confirmation or further particulars available at this time.
Special to the Tribune reports a joint conference in Indianapolis on March 19 shows little prospect of agreement as most operators oppose meeting the miners demands.
Special to the Tribune from Ouray Colorado reports rescuers attempt to reach seven hundred miners trapped in the mountains by snow slides. They face danger of starvation as efforts continue to secure access and supplies.
John Murphy a 66 year old Northwestern railroad employee died suddenly while unloading ballast from a car three miles north of town. He collapsed after lunch and died within moments likely from heart failure. Murphy had worked over twenty years as section foreman at Cobb and was respected by colleagues. His remains were sent home to Cobb on an extra train after initial examinations.
Frazier, a Milwaukee bridge gang employee, toppled from a trestle about thirty feet, sustaining a fractured leg. The accident occurred Saturday.
James May of Hanover arrived in the city this afternoon on business. The Navy secretary Charles J. Bonaparte warned a Washington theater to lift a uniform ban, threatening action via the District of Columbia commission. The manager withdrew the order. Elizabeth Rodgers, High Chief Ranger of the Women’s Catholic Order of Foresters, left for Chicago after establishing St. Ann's Court here.
Snow Hill college founder Professor Edwards, a Black educator, argues before South Presbyterian Church that government spending on education for Black children would yield long term gains. He cites underfunded Black education, counts 500 students from his school, and urges compulsory schooling, better housing, and training leaders to uplift the Black belt in Alabama.

St Ann's Court 665 of the Womens Catholic Order of Foresters was instituted at Knights of Columbus hall in Galena with 24 members. Mrs Elizabeth Rodgers of Chicago installed officers led by Mary C Kelly chief ranger and Anna McDonald vice chief ranger. Charter members include W H Gleason Hart Moran Perreault J Sheean T J Sheean Keating H Lucy Cleary Burns Cox Considine Harney and others. New court to meet first and third Fridays. growth expected.
Charles Blum has installed a new pattern bottling machine at his bottling works on Franklin street. Edward Fickbahm of West Galena announces his candidacy for road commissioner of West Galena township on the independent ticket. A horse ran dead near Burton’s bridge while a man drove it. Wm. Kennedy of Highland Wisconsin visited the city to promote the Oldenberg mine with drills expected to start soon.
The St Patrick's supper at South Presbyterian Church hosted by the Christian Endeavorers attracted a large crowd and added fifty dollars to the society treasury. C W Marshall, superintendent of the Ohio Construction Company, has moved his household goods into the Virtue residence on the East side.
