The Standard Cigar Factory reports a strong response to its Ad offer. Contestants must sign their names in full, plainly and legibly. The winner will be published in these columns after the contest closes.
The Sunday school committee met at the church parlors to arrange a March 31 banquet for Sunday school members and parents, plus a musical program to be presented next Sunday. A Easter stereopticon lecture is planned for Friday evening at the church with Miss Whalen, Mrs. Morgan Manley and Dr. Crissman appointed to arrange the program. Admission 10c. Martin Comeford, traveling engineer on the C and N W Tri weekly freight between Galena and Madison, is on vacation in Madison. temporary engine duty falls to Engineer T F Gallagher.
A flood of names pass through Galena with visitors and locals in town for business. William Jeffrey leaves for St Paul via Burlington. Several residents from Hanover Milburg Hazel Green Benton Thompson Apple River and Council Hill are noted in town or on errands. A freight train derailment near East Grant Siding delays traffic. St Marys Hospital soliciting committee held at Galena Gas Co office.
Citizens push for a $5000 appropriation from Illinois to maintain the Grant Memorial Home in Galena. The plan follows gifts from Gen Fred D Grant and heirs, with a memorial house housing relics of Ulysses S Grant, and a committee overseeing preservation. Local social notices follow.
David Strother, the first Black voter in the United States, dies at his Woodford County Illinois home. Rockford High School buys a printing plant to expand into printing alongside its manual training program. Obituary notes for Isaac Ritter of Galena born 1819 recount his move from Pennsylvania to Ohio, then Illinois, and later farm life. Ritter died March 10, 1908, aged 82, leaving a widow and five children. Golden Wedding noted four years earlier. Funeral in Galena conducted by Rev. J. A. Matlack with pallbearers named, burial at Greenwood Cemetery.
Thomas Foster died at his family residence on Park Ave this afternoon at age 88. He was a prominent Galena citizen. An extended obituary biography will appear in tomorrow's issue.
