Several Social Events In Galena Days Ahead

E. W. Montgomery led a party of about thirty five to Camp 19 for a biweekly picnic outing aboard Gear's ferry boat. The group planned to return after supper with a pleasant day and large attendance noted.

Robber Makes Escape After Daylight Home Burglary

Sheriff Whitmore investigated the Hostman home robbery near the Great Western tracks. A $38 stash was stolen from bed clothing while the couple was away at the stable. No clues were found and the thief, likely from a Great Western work camp, remains at large. vigilance ordered.

Four carloads of brick for paving arrived by train this morning over the Burlington. Central officials say the brick was not shipped via the expected route, causing a delay. More brick is en route and the paving work proceeds with no further delay once Galena receives the remaining stock.

Lanark Woman Rescued After Suicide Attempt

Mrs. William Engle of Lanark district swallowed laudanum Saturday night in a failed attempt to end her life. Domestic trouble with her husband is cited as the cause. she became severely ill but survived after medical aid.

Illinois Central to Install Manuel Block System on Omaha Division

The Illinois Central plans to install the Manuel block system on the Omaha division within two to three weeks. Linemen from Chicago will assist as the system expands toward Fort Dodge, enabling block operation from Chicago to New Orleans and west to Fort Dodge with hopes to extend to Sioux City and Omaha. Wrecks have declined since earlier pilot usage and overall safety is expected to improve for daily passengers.

Miner Falls 80 Feet in Shaft at Thanton and Crescent Mine

William Schlamp a 21 year old miner at the Thanton and Crescent mine five miles southwest of Shullsburg fell head first into an 86 foot shaft after becoming dizzy while looking down the pit and died within minutes Neck broken. He was unmarried and from Lansing Indiana. His body was sent home for burial.

Mine yields rise as Russell mine reports big ore strike

The Russell mine on Hudson land near the city reports another strong strike with vast ore in sight. Miners recovered 4000 pounds yesterday and much more today, including chunks of lead ore over 250 pounds, indicating one of the best prospects in the area.

Cattle in Poor Shape as Shippers Report Little Sales

Local live stock buyers Oldenburg and Scadden shipped several carloads to Chicago but note a light market and few cattle sold. They describe cattle as generally poor condition and say few farmers are selling at this time of year. Also reports a Menominee wedding and several local notices.
