Brooklyn leads in fireworks output with a forty acre factory and hundreds of workers producing crackers bombs and balloons. National spending on fireworks exceeds twelve million dollars as new noise devices multiply and daylight displays draw public attention.
In Galena the community faces a slate of social events. The South Presbyterian Christian Endeavorers will be entertained Thursday evening after a local piano purchase. The Endeavor society split into Presidents and Vice Presidents that vied to fund the instrument, with the Vice Presidents winning and hosting the Presidents.
E. W. Montgomery led a party of about thirty five to Camp 19 for a biweekly picnic outing aboard Gear's ferry boat. The group planned to return after supper with a pleasant day and large attendance noted.
R J Edwards states he will not be disappointed if a Galena plant fails to launch, promising future auto production in another town. Mrs. William Engle of Lanark district swallowed laudanum Saturday night in a failed attempt to end her life. Domestic trouble with her husband is cited as the cause. she became severely ill but survived after medical aid.
W P Landon, candidate in the Thirteenth district, will address a Thursday evening meeting on the street corner at the DeSoto house. His subject, The Control of the Trusts, reflects his shift from ministry to politics and his stance against trusts.
The Illinois Central plans to install the Manuel block system on the Omaha division within two to three weeks. Linemen from Chicago will assist as the system expands toward Fort Dodge, enabling block operation from Chicago to New Orleans and west to Fort Dodge with hopes to extend to Sioux City and Omaha. Wrecks have declined since earlier pilot usage and overall safety is expected to improve for daily passengers.
Live cattle receipts total about 25 000 with steady prices across grades including good to fancy steers 5 60 to 6 15 cows and heifers 3 75 to 5 26 yearlings and feeders 4 00 to 4 60 and calves 3 50 to 6 00. Hogs receipts 15 000 with opening higher prices for good to choice hogs 6 52 to 6 60, heavy and light mixes also listed. William Schlamp a 21 year old miner at the Thanton and Crescent mine five miles southwest of Shullsburg fell head first into an 86 foot shaft after becoming dizzy while looking down the pit and died within minutes Neck broken. He was unmarried and from Lansing Indiana. His body was sent home for burial.
Preparations begin for the county Sunday school convention to be held in Elizabeth on August 16 and 17. No limit on delegates from individual Sunday schools and expected large attendance. Township conventions will precede to finalize arrangements.

Reports claimed an overall factory would be located in rooms above the Galena National Bank. Bank officers deny renting the space and know nothing of any factory. The notice suggests a probable error in the rumor.

Rev Father Bally conducts a brief service witnessed by about a dozen relatives and friends. The couple plans to reside in Madison after a wedding tour ending at the groom’s Springfield Ohio home.
Jo Daviess county bridge committee met in this city and awarded a contract to F. H. Ives for building two wagon bridges in Rice Township. The project, worth about 670 dollars, will start soon and should be finished before late October.
The Russell mine on Hudson land near the city reports another strong strike with vast ore in sight. Miners recovered 4000 pounds yesterday and much more today, including chunks of lead ore over 250 pounds, indicating one of the best prospects in the area.
Local live stock buyers Oldenburg and Scadden shipped several carloads to Chicago but note a light market and few cattle sold. They describe cattle as generally poor condition and say few farmers are selling at this time of year. Also reports a Menominee wedding and several local notices.
