A telegram to Miss Elinor Barber of Freeport announces the drowning death of Fred Russ of Freeport at Fort Pierre South Dakota. Russ and partner Simon Seiffert moved to South Dakota last April to homestead near Gettysburgh and worked as carpenters. Floods along the Missouri River caused widespread damage and it is unclear if Russ drowned while aiding flood victims. He was born April 20 1871 in Berlin Germany and came to America at age 12.

A Virginian at a Chestnut Street hotel boasts nineteen former Virginians and slaves whose combined ages at death total 2241 years. Youngest died at 110. ages include 126, 121, 116, 114, 113, 112, 111, and 110. Six of the nineteen were negroes. He also cites a Neabsco Creek tombstone dating to 1608, said to refer to Lieut William Herris, who died May 11 1808 aged 65, noted as born a Briton and a loyal soldier.

Tragedy at Orfordville Marsh Gas Fatal to Two
In Orfordville Mrs. Winn er Bertness and her eight year old sister in law Odellia Bertness died from marsh gas and gasoline fumes in the cellar of the Bertness home last Friday. Veterans of the Civil War and Spanish American War, merchants and citizens of Galena are summoned to a public meeting at the Market House on Monday July 17 1905 at 730 PM to organize for the annual reunion of The Old Soldiers and Sailors Association of Jo Daviess County Illinois to be held in Galena August 15 1905. Committees on finance music decorations reception and other arrangements will be appointed and duties assigned to ensure a grand reunion for the city and its veterans. Attendance urged by all who honor service and respect Galena’s welfare. after harvest season the public is encouraged to attend the meeting and support the event.
