Wheels Entangle in Franklin Street Collision

James Welsh, a country farmer, met a peculiar accident Sunday afternoon while driving up Franklin street. Attempting to pass a buggy in the same direction, his horse shied, causing the shafts of the two rigs to become entangled. No one was hurt. only one buggy suffered a broken shaft. The shafts were repaired and Welsh continued his journey.

Whitewater Debaters Defeat Platteville in City Rail Debate

Whitewater normal school debaters beat Platteville normal school by two to one in Platteville Friday. The issue: whether Chicago city government should own and operate all street railway lines. Whitewater held the negative, with Earle Roche, Rachel Smith, and Mr. Powell. Platteville’s team included Kinsley Livingaston, Samuel Wilton, and Will Reeds.

Engineer James Hecox to retire after long service

Veteran engineer James Hecox of the Madison division on the Northwestern lines will retire in a few days upon reaching the age limit. He has operated on the Madison division since the road reached this city and is highly regarded along the line. State Fair officers once placed him in charge of an engine used at a notable exhibition collision years ago.

Mrs. W. W. Carly Dies at Hanover After Illness

Mrs. W. W. Carly, aged resident of the county, died at her Hanover home Saturday after several weeks illness following a paralysis stroke. She married Mr. Carly in June 1857 and was well known in Hanover and vicinity, with many friends who regret her passing.

Sabula Man Killed Crossing Bridge by Train

Thorn Peterson an elderly Sabula Iowa resident and Burlington roundhouse wiper was killed Sunday while crossing the Milwaukee railroad bridge over the Mississippi at Savannah. A work train struck him as he attempted to jump aside. He died instantly and is survived by a wife and family.

Directory issue aids Galena patrons with new central lists

The Central Union Telephone Co issues a new directory for Galena and nearby villages listing three hundred subscribers with names addresses and call numbers. The 20 page bound book shows alphabetical names preceded by numbers to be used in all exchanges. Changes are common so report address updates in writing for reissue.

A Dubuque Anglers League meeting at city hall elected John H. Carroll secretary, succeeding Loris Trieb, and T. L. Bott became treasurer after Titus Schmidt’s death. The group, allied with Galena Fishermen, plans to clear snagged ponds from two miles north of Eagle Point to Bellevue and secure shore rights to deter seine draggers with potential trespass arrests.

Footpad Attempt On East Side Near Rail Bridge

Benjamin Vandervale reports two men attempted to rob him Saturday night while crossing a foot bridge beside the railroad bridge on the East Side in East Galena township. He escaped after moving away as the assailants followed. Police searched railway yards and Grant Station but found no trace of the felons. The secluded, unlit bridge area is noted as ideal for such acts.
