Fall Fatal to Galena Pioneer Mrs Pfeffer

Mrs. Henry Pfeffer, 81, longtime Galena resident, died at 251 South Summit after a fall days earlier. She endured pain, then rapid decline despite medical care. Survived by two sons, John and Richard, and daughter Mrs George Wycoff of Dubuque. husband predeceased her six years ago. An event note mentions an entertainment with eighty children on January 26.

Monroe Smallpox Outbreak Spreads to School in Wisconsin

A Monroe Wisconsin smallpox case prompts health officer Gnagi to quarantine the home and fumigate the north building. Eighteen to twenty unvaccinated pupils in several classrooms, from Miss Kath ry Schiesser to Miss Stephens, face vaccination or two weeks out of school. Officials note about 35 percent of pupils unvaccinated and speculate exposure occurred at school or church.

Operators Tree Coons In Portage Chase Uncut

Warm Saturday brought the coons from winter quarters to Portage where two telegraph operators chased four raccoons up a tree. Lacking an ax, they could not fell the tree, though a watch was kept overnight. An ax was later found but the tree proved unusually large and the coons remained in the treetop.

Church Committee Appointed at St. Michael's Parish

Archbishop Quigley names Thomas F. Berry and John Cloran to a three member parish finance committee for St. Michael's for the year. The pastor serves as chairman. The rule, revived by the Chicago synod, aims to increase lay participation and ease pastoral financial duties.

Was Brutally Treated At Home Declared Dependant Child

Lena Haas a Carroll county girl who ran away to Freeport testified she was beaten and choked by her father Samuel Haas and two brothers and tied up after a prior escape. In Stephenson county court Judge Clarity declared her a dependent child and placed her custody with Mrs Boyd Py Hill. An injunction was issued against William Faler and others to prevent interference.

Damaged Bridges Prompt Flood Loss in Pleasant Valley

F H Ives supervising two county bridges in Pleasant Valley township said high water destroyed much of the work and will cost the contractor money. Floods damaged bridges and wagon roads nationwide. Ice blocked the road from the city to Seales Mound, with workmen clearing the several feet high ice across a quarter mile of roadway.

Despondent salesman ends life in Lanark hotel

Albert T. Grattelo, a veteran Woodmouse Manufacturing salesman from Freeport, killed himself with a revolver in a Lanark hotel toilet after a westward trip. Accompanied by Woodmouse secretary George Steenrod, he showed unusual behavior before the shot. An inquest led to a verdict based on the gathered facts.

Haunted Beloit house sold at sheriff’s sale for 3900

The old Preston house on Sixth street Beloit, built before the Civil War by Dr. Sanderson, was purchased today at sheriff’s sale by John P. Neill of Waunakee for 3900 dollars. The mansion has 24 rooms, a basement, wine cellar, and rumored secret passages linked to a counterfeit tale. Present occupants are Mr and Mrs EC Everett.

News of the Mines reports Galena Iron Works contracted to install machinery at the Black Hawk mine. Rowley mill Buncombe resumes, averaging eight to ten tons daily, with plans for a roaster. Watch Inspection Moves Through Galena Tomorrow

The Illinois Central division watch inspector will be in Galena tomorrow morning to examine all railroad men's watches. Operators, section men and every IC employee in the city must have their watches checked. those off by seconds may be regulated or, if badly out of order, the owner may be required to buy a new watch. The inspections occur quarterly and only top makes pass.

Hanover Boy Killed and Girl Severes Finger in Hanover

A 13-year-old boy, Atkins, died hours after injuring himself when a hand sled on a snowy hill collided with a stump near Hanover. In the same period a girl named Cass accidentally severed a finger while playing with an ax at a home in Hanover village.

Twentieth Century club meets for piques and animal papers

The Twentieth Century club met Saturday at Miss Bertha Kramer's home for a piqué program. Twelve papers on various animals educated and engaged members. Miss Edith Harper led, then the discussion turned to current events. the gathering proved very successful.

Flood Repeats in Darlington Area with High Water Marks

Floods swept Darlington and Galena Saturday night as the river rose six to eight inches higher than seven days earlier. Businesses hooded, parks flooded, and the Park Hotel and Custom House surrounded by water. Ice and debris filled the river, trains moved with caution, and a 13 year old boy drowned near Darlington. A farmer was carried away but saved himself by grabbing a tree limb. The flood damaged roads, gorges, and waterlogged tracks.

East Dubuque Man Dies After Fall

Martin Horan aged 45 a resident of East Dubuque died at Mercy hospital Dubuque Saturday resulting from a fall at his home several days earlier He had been an invalid for years and fractured a limb a week ago Sunday He was moved to Sinsinawa Wisconsin for burial after a funeral held at his former home
