Congress opened with the Senate and House performing routine preliminary work. Speaker Cannon led the House as Williams addressed the caucus on anti graft and free trade for the Philippines while pledging nonpartisan stance against subsidies. The Senate planned brief sessions and committee action ahead, with several leaders yet to take oaths.
Washington December 4 The Ameri can people have selected the speaker of the house for the Fifty ninth congress It only remains for us to ratify their choice. I will not call for a fop ya nomination but simply name Joseph G Cannon of Illinois This statement by Chairman Hepburn to Republican members of the house was met with cheers and Cannon was declared the nominee He read a typewritten speech and thanked the audience He emphasized the need to regulate commerce and prevent restraints on trade urging reform to aid producers and consumers The caucus renominated all the house officers as they were last session.
Democrats in the Mississippi house debated policies and procedure for two hours to solidify the minority and ensure harmony on all partisan matters following officer nominations. John Sharp Williams was unanimously chosen as the nominee for speaker.
In Diamondville Wyoming a explosion at Diamond Coal and Coke mine No 1 wrecked the mine and killed several miners including Robert Marshall Ferdinando Gabasdi Antonio Martignano John D Grimshaw William Wilson Henry Ringwood Gust Johnson Henry Usatalo and John John Most victims were English and recovery work is hindered by afterdamp and wreckage A prior 1901 blast killed 32 miners. Cleveland December 4. Mrs. Sarah M L Perkine a renowned Ohio woman suffragist was struck by a coal wagon at the corner of Euclid avenue and Down street and died almost instantly She was 81 years of age.

London reports alarming conditions in St. Petersburg with telegraph outages and fears of rail shutdowns. Rumors of guard disaffection and a palace revolution circulate despite limited confirmation.
London report dated December 2 describes a mutiny by a 1,000 strong sappers battalion led by a martinet commander. They seized barracks, urged others to join, but were met with stiff resistance from Azoff infantry and Cossacks. Rebels fired on loyal units, were repulsed, many fled or surrendered, and a court martial was ordered with harsher measures against future mutinies.
An undated Odessa dispatch via a speeded courier warns of a fresh massacre by the local garrison. It alleges proclamations calling soldiers to exterminate Jews and to destroy newspaper offices in Ravallege for groundless accusations against troops. The message asks for aid from the British and other authorities.
A Jewish community in a city cut off from St. Petersburg appeals to civilized nations and governments to intervene in St. Petersburg. They accuse officers of anti-Semitic speeches and the governor general of condoning disorder after Jewish soldiers were removed. They warn a catastrophe worse than any prior incident may occur unless action is taken.
In Greensboro on December 4, Mrs. J T Matthews died after her husband Dr W J Matthews allegedly gave her poison and refused another physician. A bystander testified the husband injected morphine while the wife begged to pray. Authorities say morphine caused the death. defense may claim he is a morphine fiend.
Dr Ernest Z Melere former US army surgeon who joined the Confederacy died of pneumonia in Cripple Creek Colorado at 75. He was consul at Amoy in 1886 under Cleveland then resigned after a clash over an apology to an army lieutenant. From a Maryland family and married Admiral Buchanan’s daughter, Lincoln attended the wedding. Surviving two children.
The Skarb Polski Mutual Tinking society in Milwaukee reports a $100000 shortage, up from $70000, with $15000 missing at departure by secretary Heller who vanished. Relatives say they will not cover the defalcation. two mortgages were taken to satisfy the bank examiner.
Chicago reports a historic seventy-five day delay and $18,600 expense before the twelfth juror was obtained in the Gilhooly conspiracy case. Prosecutor Pake pressed for a fair trial, while juror Romer was finally seated after tense questioning. Indictments also issued in the Brick Trust case and a civil suit filed against the Monon Railway.
A burglary at the Walnut Prairie store and post office Tuesday night last week led to the arrest of Fred Adams, a former convict, who was found with stolen goods and confessed. Chief Yellow Step connected Adams to the crime via a suspicious overnight description. Adams was transported to Clark County for trial after being paroled from Chester penitentiary. Curtis Lurry, a Walnut Prairie associate, was also arrested. both are from the Rock Island area.
Special to the Tribune says a woman believed to be Anna Gerry remains inside a stranded wagon car at Biatay near Waliwaarear. She shows signs of insanity refusing food drink or sleep for three days. Officers cannot approach. she resists and hides identity while deputies try restraint and transport attempts fail.
The Mutual Life Insurance Company vice president George D Hibridge resumed testimony in the investigations. He described typical five to six month payments after proof of death and discussed correspondence between the company and beneficiaries. Case of Jennie Vos Potter and William Potter involved large face values and later payout totals. Senator Armstrong said five sessions weekly planned to end the probe by December end, with possible extension into January if needed.
