Report notes Galenas faced tough luck in a game described as outbatted, outfielded, and out played yet credited with horse shoes as a lucky factor. Local accounts emphasize resilience, noting key plays and crowd reactions amid a close, spirited matchup.
Galena edged Highland 7 to 1 in a Sunday county league game. Strong pitched well after a rough first inning as Gate and Barnett sparked the Galena attack with multiple safeties and crucial runs. Roundy Barnett led Galena with two singles and a double, while Parish and Coover contributed timely hits to seal the contest.
Miss Jula Bahnwell returns to Chicago after visiting her parents on Franklin street. Charles McDermott back in Chicago from a two week Galen and St Paul trip. he holds a Burlington road post. Edward Fink opens a sample room in Elizabeth while continuing Galena operations. M C Brown to manage Elizabeth venture. John O Neil, East Dubuque hotel boarder, robbed of a gold watch valued at 50.50. he recalls nothing about the theft. Mr and Mrs Charles Look of Sioux Falls are visiting Uehren residence. Look plans a Sioux Falls packing plant after touring Omaha and Sioux City, and will return home tomorrow.
At a packed Galena city hall meeting, citizens promise to press promoters of an electric railway to bring the line to Galena and supply mine power. A three-member committee will negotiate with promoter A O Fox, while plans for a local mining development company move forward to attract investment and prove up nearby properties.
Dubuque third baseman Joe Bower sold to Detroit in the American League and set to report next season. Ray Hodson heads to Peoria to join the Dubuque squad. Winslow defeats Warren 5 to 2 as Ovitz fanned 22. Hodson also pitched for Warren. Freeport loses three straight to Green Bay. Peoria, last in the Three LT league, takes two from Rock Island. Ed Barry, last season with Freeport, joins Boston Americans and pitches four innings against the White Sox. Meusel brothers’ Water Sets ad noted.
Manager Roosethal of the White City Vaudeville company plans a Dubuque engagement featuring Raffles the renowned Chicago sensation. A prize of fifty dollars awaits the first to touch Raffles’ shoulder during seven days of performances. Also advertised is a land sale listing multiple parcels near Galena with farm timber and pasture land details.
Excursion tickets to the county pair at Lancaster Wisconsin via the Northwestern Line will be sold at curtailed rates September 1 to 8 inclusive with return allowed through September. Apply to agents Chicago and Northwestern Railway.
Ulysses S. Grant Jr plans a nine story hotel on his late mother's San Diego site. The 200 by 200 foot building will hold 224 lodging rooms and aims to attract tourists and winter residents, creating the city’s first proper hotel. The venture follows royalties from General Grant memoirs, though some doubt the funding.
The Freeport Standard notes Stephenson county supervisors appointing a county purchas ing agent from their own body, a practice deemed unlawful. In Freeport, “Brother Paul” leads a legal battle after the city council refuses a license, with Justice Maron ruling a $10 daily license excessive. A separate case involved profanity charges before Justice Maryin. St Joe Meh reports a record week with twenty two marriages and ninety two total in the resort. A Chicago Typothetical shop strike threatens eight hour day and closed shop, possibly spreading to twelve major Midwestern cities within a week.
Main Street paving in Galena reaches completion with the first four blocks now open to traffic. Property owners along Main from Pe to Meeker may fund portions with city reimbursement planned next year. Curbing and walks begin, with continued paving of blocks toward Perry and Diagonal within three months, possibly before Thanksgiving.
Clyde Cromer of Savanna arrived in Galena for a relatives visit. G UH Rattler traveled to Clinton and Savanna on a business trip. Rev Ralph McClay Crissman expected to arrive in Galena from Europe in a few days. Dr Evert's Preneheekt won first prize at the TreState Pair in Dabrgne last week. Eugene Wallace and Samuel Edwards returned to Galena from a two month tour of major European cities. Martin returned to Chicago after a week’s vacation, escorted by his mother Mrs Richard Martin visiting Carrie Howell and Edward Martin. Stage coach travel peaked in 1940 according to the piece.
Miss Clara Hellman daughter of Mrs M A Hellman of Bend it has been chosen chairman of the board of directors of a society called the Daughters of Temperance organized in Chicago The group patterned after the Daughters of Faith aims to abate liquor evils by ostracizing social users The president is Mrs W G C Keough The insignia will be a light blue banner with a white star Miss Hellman has long been active in Chicago temperance and charitable work with the Sinois Charitable Relief Corps aiding inmates at Cook County jail John Worthy School and Dunning Asylum

The Big Badger Fair at Platteville offers special trains and reduced rates. A good field of horses, hotly contested races, large premiums, and fine exhibits promise a big crowd with first class attractions including the Great Prosper Troupe and other acts. Dates are August 29 to September 1.

A Minneapolis, Hibbing and Duluth backed purchase of the 164 acre Erbe farm in West Galena, known as the Flat Sheet property, is set to be developed with modern machinery. Judge Speasley oversees hiring and setup while Spensley directs initial mining. nearby mines report activity and strong ore findings as plans for a development company advance.
Work began this morning to remove all telephone poles on Main street between Franklin and Warren streets. The cable was taken down and removal should finish by tomorrow evening as the Central Union Company completes plans for two new cables on Bench and Commerce streets. The street’s appearance improves with the pole removal. An unrelated ad for a digestion remedy follows.
