The Dubuque Times notes Illinois Central plans a double track from Omaha through Freeport to Chicago to handle expected freight from Union Pacific and Oregon Short Line after current contracts end. County Fuel Committee Awards Court House and Jail Fuel Contracts

The county fuel committee met Wednesday at the Court House and opened bids for furnishing fuel. Slattery & Sons won the Court House coal contract for 60 tons, while Popp & Desmond secured the County Jail dry oak wood for 35 cords. The Poor Farm beating plant contract went to a Chicago firm.

Crickets Swarm Through City Causing Widespread Nuisance

Thousands of crickets have swarmed the city over several evenings. They gather around street lamps and lighted shop windows, covering sidewalks and devouring exposed woolen garments. The pests are said to be harmless to crops but highly annoying and prone to feeding on fabrics.
