Galena Iron Works Co has won a contract to build two of the most powerful mining pumps in Illinois Wisconsin to drain the Marsden Black Jack mine near the city. The plan calls for two 18 inch cross head lift pumps driven by 18 foot gears weighing 6,000 pounds each. Construction has begun and the pumps should be in operation within forty five days of signing.

Man nearly killed after foot slips while boarding moving train
East Dubuque resident Joe Van dermuelen narrowly escaped death at Bast Cabin last week when his foot slipped while attempting to board a moving train. He was knocked down and rolled about 20 feet, striking an oil box and somersaulting before landing. Train crews called it the closest call they had seen.

Hay loft fall wounds man in Nutwood livery barn
James Broker of Platteville Wisconsin arrived to see his son Frank injured when he fell through a hay loft in the Nutwood livery barn Wednesday evening. Frank’s back was broken and his condition remained critical at Finley hospital. Broker slept in the hay loft during summer and fell from the loft while waking at 4 am, landing on a manger stand. Paralysis followed and death was expected according to the Dubuque Times.
