Pretty Evening Wedding in Galena

A wedding Thursday night at the home of Mr and Mrs Joseph Jonas united Miss Adah Jonas to Mr Julius C Koempel. Rev John Van de Erge officiated with immediate family present. The couple left for a two week wedding trip from Dubuque and will reside with the bride's parents until September.

Frost in Six Weeks Arises From Katydid Lore

Campmeeting at Lena Opens With Large Attendance

The thirty fifth annual Freeport district camp meeting began at Lena with strong expectations of a large turnout. Highlights include Old Soldiers' Day August 12, Missionary Day August 8, Haworth League Day August 19, and multiple Sunday services led by Rev. Hardin and Rev. Powers. An electric lighting setup and a new hymn book will be used on the grounds.

Farmers on rural routes may receive mail with box and route numbers on envelopes to identify their residence. An order by Fourth Assistant Postmaster General P V McGraw directs consecutive numbering on boxes along Freeport routes to reduce delivery errors. The system, still being rolled out, standardizes farm and route identification for mail service.

Clinton's Cancellation Sparks Livingston Baseball Shuffle

A Livingston crowd watched Clinton cancel its game with Galena forcing Cuba City to fill the slot. Babcock started for Cuba City, Bray finished as pitcher after six runs, yielding a 13 to 1 Galena victory. Highland beat Mineral Point as Ovitz fanned fifteen but bad defense cost Mineral Point.

Grand Army to Denver for encampment and patriotism push

Veterans from Illinois plan to attend the Grand Army encampment in Denver Colorado next month. Railroads offer a very cheap round trip from Galena with sale dates August 30 to September 1. Illinois and sister states back a new patriotic instructor to coordinate school instruction from local to national levels. Flag Day June 14 may be observed nationwide by the Grand Army. A pensions official urges quarterly death reports to update veterans records.

Judge William Spensley Speaks at Early Settlers Picnic

At Twin Springs near Dubuque the Early Settlers association picnic featured Judge William Spensley of Galena as a speaker. He, born in Dubuque county and raised in Jo Daviess, was admitted to the bar in 1867 or 1868 after exams before Judge Adams and Colonel Ly. Other speakers included Colonel Townsend, B. J. Richards, and W. H. Torhert.

Child Dies After Father jailed for brutal assault

Richland Center Wisconsin August 10 A seven month old child of Mr and Mrs Charles Fritz died after being beaten by the father who two weeks earlier pounded and choked the infant. Fritz is serving six months in jail and fined $100 for assault and battery and a new charge is expected after the sentence ends.
