A San Francisco bulletin reports three homeless camps near Fort Mason Presidio Golden Gate Park and south of the Presidio amid fires and pestilence. Water shortages hunger and looting persist as relief efforts mobilize with Roosevelt contributing 1000 and insurers promising losses payments while fires burn toward the ocean.
San Francisco endures a catastrophic urban blaze that destroys two thirds of the city, displaces hundreds of thousands to Golden Gate Park and Oakland, devastates landmarks such as the St. Francis and Fairmont hotels, and triggers a military lockdown with widespread casualties and immeasurable property loss.
The Galena city council voted unanimously to donate 100 dollars to aid San Francisco victims after the earthquake. Mayor Scheerer supported action urged by William R Hearst and mass meetings followed with residents pledging funds. banks were named as depositories and five ward committees formed to canvass for contributions. The funds will be sent promptly to the stricken city to help feed and shelter the homeless.
