A tall monument at Gettysburg commemorates the Fourth Ohio Infantry. The shaft bears a figure in full regimental attire and rises on East Cemetery Hill, marking a tribute to heroic deeds.
Beall High School led the Allegany county field at Cumberland as their students swept 27 of 39 possible first places among 500 athletes. Notable wins came in the 80 lb classes and relays with stars including Robert Anderson Bennie Goldsmith and Louis Sluss. The team earned a trip to Baltimore for the state meet on June 9.
Mrs Gladfelty of Broadway was a guest last week of relatives in Lona coning.
Thoburn Post No 71 G A R plans a Sunday church service at 11 am at First Presbyterian then a 10 am gathering at Broadway HQ for details to graveyards. An afternoon 2 pm march to St Michael’s and Allegany cemetery includes bands and speakers with flower donations requested by 10 am Tuesday.
Friends and colleagues celebrate Prof. Edward F. Webb for being appointed superintendent of Allegany County public schools, succeeding Prof. John E. Edwards. Webb, former Frostburg State Normal School principal, will assume duties July 1, with the term starting August 1. The change follows Edwards moving to Tome Institute, Port Deposit, Md. The article notes Webb’s leadership helped the normal school become a leading state institution.
Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Percy died in Frostburg on May 19 born August 22, 1844 in Indiana Pa. Survived by five children seven grandchildren two daughters and one son. Funeral last Sunday conducted by Rev. H H Beidleman and Rev. J H Bickford burial in Allegany Cemetery. Her active church work and civic efforts, especially for Miners Hospital Auxiliary, marked a long life of service. Also recalled is Rev. G W Cooper and Uncle William a beloved man of faith, humor, and gentleness who peacefully joined his Father’s house. Survived by sister Mrs. Mary Hocking of Johnstown and son John Mitchell Oates of Meyersdale.
An obituary memorial recounts William Taylor Oates born February 6, 1824 in St Just Cornwall He lived a century as a kindly saintly figure and church official in Frostburg and Meyersdale He died in Meyersdale Pa and was buried there after a service at the local church reflecting a life marked by faith and charity.
Mrs. Neid found her husband Louis C. Neid dead on the cellar floor of their Tarn Terrace home. Authorities believe he was mentally irresponsive at the time of death. Neid, 42, chief auditor of Consolidation Coal Company Maryland Division, survived a severe accident last fall in which he suffered a fractured skull while traveling with three Frostburg men to the Hagerstown fair.
